United Bamboo isn’t all much of an elusive design house, to me, at least. While many of the looks remind me of grade school days, I wasn’t too pleased with the jumpers at all. I love jumpers; mind you these ones weren’t tailored to a tee. In fact, they were rather boxy. Some of the shirts, rather than of a chic ensemble, were sort of, well, secretary-ish. That’s terrible to put a label on it, but it was sort of uptight. What I can give a well done to, though, was the overcoats that had great construction details, and the cocktail dresses, well, at least there were a couple sweet dresses.

Vena Cava
Vena cava, designed by duo Sophia Buhai and Lisa Mayock, described her collection as going from acoustic to digital this season. For fall 09, the girls opted for a much more grown up, sexy look. Similar to previous seasons, the duo showed off their signature leggings and long (as well as some short) dresses with cuts out. But they went a little more 80’s rock ‘n roll with the additional of some leather motorcycle jackets, fur, fringe, studs, sequins, and zippers. Being the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund runners up for 2008, each piece carries its own wearability, and entire looks will be easily pulled off as well. The twenty one look collection certainly held interest, although, with promise of multiple surprises with detail, I think there was a slight let down with the final product. While we, as viewers of the collection, hoped for the best that has yet to come from Vena Cava, we were give, still, a great collection, but just not living up to the hype that had been projected.
Putting a twist on the regular, Victoria Bartlett of VPL took the ordinary and deconstructed it to put together pieces that have a natural twist. Many of the pieces were knit, which I adore for fall. There’s nothing better than something warm that has the “comfort” appeal. Bartlett’s pieces’ll be the type that get picked up and worn for years. Typical basics but different enough that boredom doesn’t ensue. My favourite pieces fell first at the beginning of the show, a romp of electric shades of blue, and then I was slightly turned off by a few of the yellow and brown family pieces, but, alas, my love picked up once again with the introduction of, you guessed it, black. An, altogether, well put together collection exemplifying the need for basics for Fall 09.
