new york fashion week, day one, part two

Costella Tagliapietra
Costello Tagliapietra is more than a mouth full to say, but the duo designers show was ubersimple to watch. Jeffery Costello and Robert Tagliapietra noted that they were sick of hearing about the recession, and, to be honest, it does get to be a little much sometimes. Which is why it’s refreshing to see an all-out glamour collection. The Fall 09 line up was about pure construction. I have never seen pleats looks so great. And with the collection being composed of (nearly) entirely all jersey fabric that the duo helped to create with Ultrasuede, these will be some dresses that I don’t think I’d ever want to get out of, once I’d slipped it on. The collection felt warm and inviting, shades of sage and moss green and bold orange were the hits needed to give this collection the over the top power umph in between all the black, greys, nude, and ivory pieces.

Cushnie et Ochs
Another designer dup, Carly Cushnie and Michele Ochs, for Cushnie et Ochs, focused their Fall 09 collection solely on body consciousness. Super slim silhouettes stomped the runway, and while the colour palette was simplistic and minimal, the marbling effect on much of the fabric made each piece ultra elusive. I wanted most of these pieces straight away. For this collection being only the duo’s second runway show, I’d say we have another top design house making their way, very quickly, to the top. Some of my favourite pieces included the slate grey marble printed minidress, the shiny wet mock neck black minidress with one sleeve sheer (it’s all in the unordinary details, I tell you), the oversized lapel grey blazer, the cut out black tunic top with a full sleeve of silver sequin, and the metallic gold sportswear blazer. Devine.

Davidelfin
David Delfin transported his Fall 09 collection from Milan all the way to New York this year. And while some of his pieces aren’t so much ready-to-wear as they could be (maybe back in Milan?), the span between reality and fantasy was definitely crossed here, which is always something nice to see. It’s liking getting inside the mind of an artist: never actually possible, and quite hard to completely do, but worth trying at every opportunity. The Davidelfin fall 09 collection projected looks for both men and women, and while many of the dresses were stunning, I couldn’t get over the slim cut menswear. Loved it.

Jason Wu
I can’t believe Jason Wu is only twenty six years old and he has already made such a strong mark on the runways of New York, mind you, some people may not have even been able to recall his name had it not been for Michelle Obama wearing one of his chiffon gowns to the inaugural balls. This Fall collection, Wu said, was inspired by fairy tales: pretty, polished princess gowns were his focus. All the ladies dining on Park Avenue would simply adore the pieces in Wu’s collection. I mean, I’m not Park Avenue material, and I still gawk over everything. The only thing I am still peddling in my mind was the choice of such an electric shade of yellow. It was a little hard on the eyes, and I’m just looking from a computer screen. Imagine the addition of the lighting. And to think that Wu is supplying to three times as many retailers this year than last! That means great goods for everyone!

Nicole Miller
Ah yes, Nicole Miller. The reason why Miller has the accomplished career as a designer that she does is because what she creates for women to wear cannot only actually be worn, it can be worn by either myself or my mother: someone who is twenty one and someone who is forty four. The collection is made for women everywhere, at every age. While Miller typically bounces of every shade of the colour wheel, this collection was much darker, with more autumn-ish tones, and held up an extremely sophisticated tone. The geometric prints, coupled with black tights and stunner pumps pulled this collection together. Oh, did I mention Nicole Miller loves vegans too? You may be ogling over the faux leather pieces more than I am. Second oh! Party dresses galore! No need to say you couldn’t find anything in time for New Years 09!

Much love,
s.
